About Venice
Getting there
Direct flights to Venice Marco Polo Airport go from London (Gatwick and Luton with Easyjet) and Manchester (Easyjet, Monarch and Jet2). The airport is 12km from Venice. Water taxis to Venice leave from the airport ferry dock, about an eight-minute walk from the terminal, and take anything from 45 to 90 minutes to reach popular destinations. Sea-Lifts offer motorised taxis that take 20-30 minutes to reach the Piazzale Roma, the only point in central Venice accessible by car. From there, take the vaporetto (water bus) to your final destination.
Town
The most popular sights are in the neighbourhood of San Marco, with its famous square dominated by the basilica built to house the bones of St Mark the Evangelist. Next door is the Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s palace) the seat of Venice’s government for nearly seven centuries. The best way to see Venice though is by boat, hiring a gondola or taking the vaporetto along the Grand Canal to see the stunning architecture and famous bridges.
Beaches
The Venice Lido is an island that divides the lagoon from the open sea. There are quite a few beaches including Alberoni, set in a WWF protected nature reserve with the Circolo Golf course nearby. The Lido is easily reachable on the vaporetto. Other beaches can be found along the coast, about 30km from Venice, via public transport from the Piazzale Roma.
Events
Carnevale – including the St Valentine’s Masquerade Ball (February); Vinitaly – Italy’s premier expo of wine and spirits (April); Vogalonga – 32km ‘long row’ with 1800 boats (May); Venice Jazz Festival (July); Regata Storica – re-enactment of the arrival of the Queen of Cyrpus (September); Venice Marathon (October).
History
Venice was founded in 421 AD, step by step it was built on several islands of a lagoon, separated by canals and linked by bridges. The Republic of Venice was a major financial and maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. After the Napoleonic Wars the republic was annexed by the Austrian Empire until it became part of Italy in 1866. Famous Venetians include the explorer Marco Polo, the composer Antonio Vivaldi and legendary lover Giacomo Casanova. The lagoon and part of the city are listed as a World Heritage Site.
