Getting there
Chamonix is 88km from Geneva Airport which serves as a hub for easyJet Switzerland. easyJet flies direct from Bristol, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London (Gatwick and Luton), Manchester and Newcastle upon Tyne and seasonally from Belfast, Birmingham, Glasgow, London Southend and London Stansted. British Airways flies from Heathrow and Gatwick. FlyBe, Jet2 and Thomson offer further seasonal flights from: Cardiff, Doncaster/Sheffield, East Midlands, Exeter, Isle of Man, Jersey, Leeds/Bradford and Southampton.
Resort
The French resort of Chamonix is at the foot of Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain (16,000 feet). It is 80km southeast of Geneva, Switzerland, and 226km from Lyon. It has one of the biggest glaciers in Europe accessible by the Montenvers rack railway. It also boasts one of the highest cable cars in the world which starts at 1,035m and finishes 3,810m above sea level. The 5km ride goes from Aiguille du Midi in France to Helbronner in Italy and provides the closest views of Mont Blanc. There’s also a crystals museum in the town exhibiting an impressive collection, mostly from Chamonix. For keen golfers there’s also an 18-hole course.
Sports
As well as walking and cycling there is a wide range of sports on offer in the summer including: Bowling, at the lanes in Cham Sud; Bunjee jumping, in nearby St Gervais; Canoeing/kayaking; Canyoning, plunging into mountain streams; Fishing, at Lac des Ilettes; Hot-air ballooning; Hydro-speeding; Indoor climbing at the Mont Blanc Escalade in Les Houches; Paintballing at Bois du Bouchet; Paragliding; Rock climbing; and Skydiving. There’s also the Centre Sportif Richard Bozon which has a swimming pool complex with four different pools and a hydro slide.
Walking and hiking
With over 350km of marked trails Chamonix has a range of walks to suit everyone from valley floor strolls, to mid-mountain balcony walks and multi-day high mountain hikes. At the other end of the spectrum there is the famous Tour du Mont Blanc which is a nine day, 160km, hike of Mont Blanc through France, Italy and Switzerland.
History
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc was the site of the first Winter Olympics in 1924 and is one of the oldest ski resorts in France. It was part of the historical land of Savoy shared between France, Italy and Switzerland. The commune of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc includes 16 villages and hamlets. During the Second World War a children’s home operated in Chamonix, in which several dozens of Jewish children were hidden from the Nazis.
