Located close to the famous Sao Juliao da Barra Fortress, explore the many cultural attractions along this stretch of coastline. Additionally, Carcavelos is close to the vibrant city of Lisbon, boast major tourist attractions in Portugal, with trips to Belem, Cascais and Sintra also possible.
Carcavelos Nightlife
There is a wide selection of bars and restaurants in Carcavelos, however many choose to visit areas closer to Lisbon. Bairro Alto is a lively neighbourhood in Lisbon which has a tradition to order a caipirinha or caipiroska and drink it in the street, enjoying the warm temperatures and friendly atmosphere. For those looking for a more vibrant atmosphere, Lux in Santa Apolonia is regarded as one of the best clubs in Europe, with queues often going around the corner.
The best surf spots near Carcavelos
Paco de Arcos
A sheltered point break located to the northeast of Carcavelos, Arcos can be inconsistent. Best when the wind direction is from the north-northwest and the swell angle is from the south-west, the point break favours lefts. Crowded when the surf is good, it’s usually relatively flat during the summer months.
Praia da Carcavelos
One of the best beach breaks in Portugal, Carcavelos is home to many excellent surf schools and surf camps. A reliable surf spot, it’s best experienced when the wind direction is from the north and the swell angle is from the west. Providing both left and right-handers, the waves are good at all stages of the tide, although it can be crowded when it’s working.
Praia da Torre
Best experienced when the wind direction is from the north-northwest and the swell angle is south south-west, Torre is a beach break located to the east of Carcavelos. Producing move lefts and rights, it can be crowded when the surf is good. Somewhat unpredictable, the summer months can generally be flat.
Praia de Santa Amaro
A popular spot for surfing during the winter months, Santo Amaro is an exposed point break close to Forte de Sao Joao das Maias. Amaro is best experienced around high tide when the wind direction is from the north and the swell angle is from the south-west.

When is the best time to surf in Carcavelos
Whilst most areas around Carcavelos are generally best experienced during the autumn/winter months, this can vary depending on the surfer’s ability:
Surf conditions between May to September are ideal for beginners to be introduced to surfing and develop their skills. During this period the waves are much more gentle than during the winter months, making it perfect for learning. Surf schools are generally busy during this period.
Intermediate surfers will find the surf conditions are suitable in Carcavelos all year-round, with May, June and September being the best month. Whilst more experienced surfers may find summer months relatively flat, these are great for improving your technique ready for winter waves.
Surf conditions between September and March are perfect for expert surfers in Carcavelos. Avoiding the summer crowds, the improved swell can produce some powerful waves that will test surfer’s ability. Full wetsuits are recommended during this period despite the mild temperatures.

Established in 2005, 7ª Essência Surf and Bodyboard School is one of the oldest surf schools accredited by the Portuguese Surf Federation. Providing class and activities in both the Oeiras and Cascais area, the school mainly uses Carcavelos, Guincho and Ericeira. Catering to surfers of all abilities and ages, the school provides group lessons depending on ability and those specifically designed for children. In addition, visitors can book private lessons, or try stand-up paddle boarding.
Carcavelos Surf School
One of the first surf schools in Portugal and the first in Carcavelos beach, Carcavelos Surf School was established in 2001 and has taught over 30,000 people to surf. Based on Carcavelos Beach, the school offers 2-hour ability-based group lessons for all ages. All lessons are taught by certified teachers, with insurance and equipment provided.
LX Surf Camp & School
Based on Carcavelos Beach, LX Surf Camp & School is headed by Pedro Couto who has 38 years of surfing experience. Specialising in stoked surf, bodyboard and SUP lessons, the school can provide lessons for all ages and abilities. Offering 2-hour ability-specific group lessons or private surf lessons, all tuition is provided by teachers accredited by the Portuguese Surfing Federation. In addition, visitors can book private surf lessons, a surf guide, yoga lessons or stand-up paddleboard lessons.
