The best surf spots near Biarritz
Côte des Basques
Cote des Basques is where surfing became popular in France and it still has a lively and vibrant surf scene today. Longboarders can enjoy mellow walls which are sheltered from the northern Atlantic winds. The sea is friendly to beginners from knee to shoulder-height, whilst there is more energy from head-height onwards (especially drifting south), so there’s plenty for different levels of ability.
This beach is very popular with surf schools, beginner surfers and holidaymakers. However, they will all have to leave when the high tide covers the beach.
Le Grande Plage
Located in the centre of Biarritz, Le Grand Plage is one of the most popular spots on the Basque coast to catch a wave. Slightly calmer than Anglet, the smoother conditions make this spot crowded during peak conditions. Despite this, riding a wave is worth fighting for as Le Grand Plage is an iconic place to surf.
Le Miramar
Made up of both sand and rocks, Le Miramar is best experienced mid tide when waves between 1m to 3m can be created. Less crowded than Le Grand Plage, the horizon is dominated by the local landmark, ‘La Roche Percee’, ‘pierced rock’. It’s as a result of this formation that Le Miramar can have some nice bowls depending on the direction of the swell.
Marbella
Home to the Marbella Surf Club, if you are looking to surf with the locals, Marbella is the surf spot for you. Great on an outgoing tide or when the waves are smaller, this surf spot has rocks at the northern end and a groin to the south.
