Things to do in Nazare

In addition to surfing, there are lots of activities in Nazare for visitors to enjoy. Nazare has some incredible restaurants, with seafood being a speciality. Restaurant Celeste is a small restaurant with extremely friendly service. A favourite with surfer Garrett McNamara, we recommend trying the Arroz Doce, a type of traditional rice pudding. Taverna do 8 o 80 is also a great option for its extensive wine list, whilst Pires a Sardinha serves incredible grilled fish. For those look for a more vibrant atmosphere, Lisbon is located just 1 hour away and offers some of the best clubs in Europe such as Lux in Santa Apolonia and the famous neighbourhood of Bairro Alto.

Praia do Norte

Located to the north of Nazare, Praia do Norte is a very reliable surf spot that is great all year round. Located in Beirais, Norte is a reef break that is best experienced when the swell angle is from the west and the wind direction is from the east. Great when Nazare is too crowded, Norte is rarely busy.

Nazare

A fairly consistent exposed beach break, Nazare rose to fame when Hawaiian surfer Garret McNamara surfed a giant wave measuring 23.4m in 2011. Since then, this spot has attracted many international big wave riders, especially when the winter swells come. Offering both lefts and rights, it’s best experienced when the wind direction is from the east and the swell direction is from the west.

Praia Paredes

Producing good surf at all stages of the tide, Praia Paredes is a great surf spot any time of the year. A consistent beach break that produces both left and rights, it is best experienced when the wind is from the east south-east and the swell angle is from the west-northwest.

Sao Pedro de Muel

Producing both lefts and rights, Sao Pedro de Muel is a great surf spot at all stages of the tide. An exposed beach break, Sao Pedro can work at any time of year but is best experienced when the swell angle is from the west and the wind is from the east.

When is the best time to surf in Nazare

A consistent spot all year round, Nazare is capable of producing record-breaking waves. The best time surf at Nazare can vary significantly depending on the surfer’s ability.

Beginners are advised to avoid the huge winter swells and visit Nazare between May and September. During this period, surfers benefit from the warmer temperatures and calmer swells producing mellow waves which are ideal for learning and practising surfing technique.

Intermediate surfers will enjoy the surf conditions at Nazare all year round, with the best months being September and October. With numerous spots producing consistent surf, there is enough variety to satisfy all surfers and challenge their ability.

Advanced surfers will enjoy the huge waves this stretch of coast can produce. The best time to experience Nazare is between September and March when the huge winter swell creates large, powerful waves. Even if you don’t want to surf the waves, this time of year is perfect for watching the big wave surfers perform.
