In addition to surfing, there is plenty of activities in Peniche to keep visitors occupied. The town’s Fortress, which is now a museum, is a local and national landmark and is dedicated to those incarcerated during the time of political prisoners in Portugal prior to 1974. Another popular activity is boat trips to the Berlengas Islands which are a scuba diving hotspot.

There are many excellent restaurants around Peniche as it is a vibrant surf resort. Tasca do Joel is one of the best ones and features a gourmet shop with a great delicatessen can be found. If you are looking for a vibrant atmosphere, Bar do Bruno is located right on Baleal Beach and is known for its great beach parties.
The best surf spots near Peniche
Cantinho da Baia
Beginning in Peniche and ending in Baleal, Cantinho da Baia is known for being a consistent spot that is best for beginners and intermediate surfers. The base of some of the best surf schools, the spot is protected from big swells by the headland making it possible to surf regardless of large swells hitting the coast.
Porto Batel
A pointbreak that has a pretty consistent surf, Porto Batel is best experienced during the winter months. Best at mid-tide, when there is a swell from the west when the surf is good, it can produce waves up to 3 metres and the spot can become quite busy.
Foz do Arelho
An exposed beach break to the northeast of Peniche, Foz do Arelho is a fairly unpredictable surf spot. Best around mid-tide when the swell is from the west, it can get quite busy when the surf works.
Supertubos
A fairly exposed beach and reef break that has quite reliable surf, Supertubos is a must visit when staying in Peniche for a surf holiday. Working best in offshore winds when the swell is from the southwest, this spot creates incredible tubular waves. When the surf is good it can become quite crowded but is worth heading down just to watch the pro-surfers perform.

When is the best time to surf in Peniche
A consistent surf resort all year-round, the surfer’s ability level dictates when Peniche is at its best.
Beginners will find the conditions between May and September are ideal, with temperatures ranging between 25C-30C. Instead of large, intimidating swells, surf is more approachable, and you will find all surf schools are extremely busy during this period.
The surf conditions between March and May and September and October are ideal for Intermediates, with September being particularly good for those looking to challenge themselves. Temperatures remain between 20C-25C, and waves are consistent enough to enjoy surfing right along the coast.
Although the surf beaches around Peniche produce consistent surf, advanced surfers will find the surf conditions between October and March excellent. With the WSL Surf tour visiting Peniche every year in October, this is an excellent time to visit.
