Things to do in Mundaka
A traditional fishing village, the old port area of Mundaka is surrounded by colourful Basque houses and is extremely picturesque. Fans of Game of Thrones can also opt for a day trip to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Situated 35 minutes away from Mundaka, this small island is connected to the mainland by an old stone bridge and is better known as the Dragonstone home of Daenerys Targaryen.

Visitors to Mundaka must try one of the Basque Country’s most popular delicacies, pintxos. Located in the centre of town, one of the best places to try this is Bar Goika. If you are looking for a more vibrant nightlife, the city of Bilbao is just 30 minutes away and offers a lively and fun atmosphere. The best surf spots near Mundaka
Mundaka
A consistent exposed river break, Mundaka is often crowded as a result of its impressive reputation. Whilst summer tends to be relatively flat, the spot is best experienced during low tide when the wind direction is from the south and the swell angle is from the northwest. Offering both lefts and rights, surfers should be careful of the powerful rips.
Playa de Laida
Best experienced during the summer months, Playa de Laida is a consistent surf spot. An exposed river break, it is best experienced with a wind direction from the south-southeast and a swell direction from the northwest. Producing both lefts and rights, this spot is never too crowded.
Playa de Laga
An exposed beach break that works all year round, Playa de Laga produces consistent waves. Best experienced with offshore winds from the south-southeast and a swell direction from the northwest, Playa de Lago offers both left and rights.
Bakio
A reliable surf spot that can work all year round, Bakio is a great option whilst visiting Mundaka for a surf holiday. An exposed beach break that has good surf at all stages of the tide, Bakio is best experienced with wind directions from the south and a swell direction from the north-northwest. Producing both left and right-handed waves, crowds are likely when the waves are good and a gath helmet is advised.

When is the best time to surf in Mundaka
Boasting multiple reliable spots, Mundaka is a great destination for a surf holiday all year-round. Despite this, the surf conditions are at their best depending on the surfer’s ability.
Beginners should avoid the powerful winter swell and visit Mundaka between May and September, with the best months being July, August and September. Allowing the swell to settle, surfers benefit the warmer water temperatures and mellower waves that are perfect for learning and practising technique.
Intermediate surfers are best suited to the surf conditions in Mundaka between September and November, and January and February. With the busy summer crowds disappearing, surfers can enjoy the building swell whilst still enjoying the mild climate.
Expert surfers should visit Mundaka between October and March, with conditions between June and August generally unsuitable. By visiting during this period, surfers will benefit from the stronger swell producing more powerful waves and fewer people sharing them.
