Things to do in San Sebastian
One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, San Sebastian is situated in an excellent location that provides spectacular panoramic views. Apart from surfing, there are lots of things to do in San Sebastian for visitors to do. Museo de San Telmo is the biggest museum of Basque History, showcasing an extensive collection of artefacts to give an interesting insight into the country’s history. The city also features incredible architecture with La Catedral del Buen Pastor being just one example. Alternatively, some may wish to sample some of the regions renowned cuisine and join a Pintxos Tour to find the best places in the city.
San Sebastian Nightlife
Home to more Michelin Star restaurants than any other Spanish city, a large part of San Sebastian’s culture is its food. Famous for tapas, known as Pintxos, it is served by all of the town’s bars and you can even join tours to find the best places to eat. Like all major cities, the nightlife in San Sebastian great, and the Old town has plenty of bars and clubs that stay open until the early hours.
The best surf spots near San Sebastian
La Zurriola
One of the most consistent beach breaks in Spain, La Zurriola runs for 800 metres along the east side of the city. Perfect for beginners, Zurriola is an exposed beach break that offers consistent surf all year round. Best experienced when the wind is from the southeast and the swell is from the northwest, the beach break offers both lefts and rights.
La Concha
A nice mellow exposed beachbreak, La Concha has somewhat inconsistent surf. Best experienced when the swell angle is from the northwest and the wind direction is from the south, La Concha produces both right and left-handed waves. A good spot for beginners and intermediates, it can get quite crowded due to its proximity to the city.
Zarautz
An extremely consistent surf spot that works great in summer, Zarautz is a must visit whilst travelling to San Sebastian for a surfing holiday. Best around high tide when the wind is from the south and the swell direction is from the north-northwest, Zarautz is an exposed beach break that has both left and rights. Although a little bit out of San Sebastian, it is likely to be crowded if the waves are working.
Orio
Located to the west of San Sebastian, Orio is a reliable exposed beach/jetty/river mouth break. Orio is best experienced during the autumn months when the winds are from the south and the swell direction is from the northwest. With waves at the beach break creating both lefts and rights, this spot can get crowded when the surf is good.

When is the best time to surf in San Sebastian
San Sebastian boasts a fantastic climate, with mild winters and very sunny summers that range between 23C and 30C. Although relatively consistent all year round, the best time to visit San Sebastian for a surfing holiday can vary depending on the surfer’s ability.
The best time to visit San Sebastian for beginner surfers is between May and October. The water stays warm during the summer as a result of the flow of the Bay of Biscay making lessons very enjoyable. During this time you will only need a light wetsuit or shorts.
San Sebastian is a great surf spot for Intermediate surfers, with suitable conditions occurring all year round. The best months for intermediates to visit are September, October and November, when the swell has increased, and waves are more powerful than the summer months. Although the summer crowds will have disappeared, the water remains a pleasant temperature.
Rather than visit San Sebastian during the summer months when the waves are more gentle, expert surfers will be best suited to the surf conditions between November and March. Although water temperatures have cooled, the increased swell produces powerful waves that experts will enjoy and be challenged by.
