Town
Spain’s largest beach resort, Torremolinos is made up of several distinct districts stretching either side of the Town Centre: El Bajondillo is the beach area closest to the town, east of here are the commercial tourist area of Playamar (home of the infamous high-rise hotels from the 60s and 70s) and then the pleasant beach-side district of Los Alamos. West of the Town Centre lie La Carihuela – the old fishing village, of which some architecture survives, and then Montemar which adjoins the neighbouring municipality of Benalmádena.
Beaches
There are six main beaches: Los Alamos, Playamar, Bajondillo, La Carihuela, Montemar and El Satillo. The 7km main promenade has recently undergone improvements with additional landscaping and wider pavements so all the beaches are linked. Bajondillo is the biggest and busiest beach, but the further you walk east the quieter the beaches become, although this is also a naturist area so you may encounter some nudity. To the west is La Carihuela and Montemar.
Golf
Opened in 2013 the Miguel Angel Jimenez golf academy in Torremolinos has a 9-hole Par 3 course, there is also a large two-tiered driving range, practice chipping and bunker areas and putting green. Other local courses are: Guadalhorce (18 holes, also designed by Miguel Angel Jimenez); Lauro (27 holes); Alhaurin (18 holes); and Torrequebrada (18 holes). Whichever course you’re playing this season, book your transfers through Sea-Lifts!
History
Originally a small fishing village with windmills, Torremolinos became a holiday destination in the 1930s and 40s when the first hotels were built. By the 1950s it had acquired international fame and was visited by celebrities such as Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Orson Welles. Today it has been transformed into a landscape of modern high-rise hotels and apartment blocks. The resort has a pleasant, cosmopolitan atmosphere.
