Town
Tossa de Mer is on the Costa Brava, 103km north of Barcelona and 100km south of the border with France. The walled-in Old Town is the only example of a fortified medieval town on the Catalan coast. Within the walls are the stunning castle; the Governor’s House (now the Municipal Museum); the House of Holy Cloth (San Drap); a medieval hospital; and remnants of a Romanesque church. The Moorish Tower, built to protect against pirates is a climb up a rocky slope but offers great views back down over the town.
Beaches
There are four beaches: Platja Gran Tossa de Mar is the main beach in front of the town, 380m long and enclosed on one side by the old town’s medieval castle; La Mar Menuda on the other side of the bay offers beach sports and is good for snorkelling and scuba diving; behind the town walls you’ll find El Codolar, accessed by climbing a cobbled pathway; and Platja Santa Maria de Llorell is a golden sandy beach with great views over the bay.

History
Tossa de Mer dates back to the Neolithic period. In the 12th century the town was walled off and a castle built on the highest point, Mount Gardi. The castle was subsequently replaced by a windmill and then a lighthouse, which still exists today. The first houses outside the walls were built in 1500 and development there has continued ever since. In 1989 Tossa de Mer was the first place in the world to declare itself anti-bullfighting.
